Pretty Thunderstorms
01/February/10 14:37
Today we had a small change of thunderstorms. They were actually kind of cute and fuzzy. Took some snaps of one of them coming right at me. This one gave 1 blast and 5 minutes of heavy hail with a max. of 1/2 cm in diameter, some wind gust but all weren’t that severe. Within 15 minutes the sky was blue and the sun was shining again. Though the temperature suddenly dropped below zero...

Ice Storm
31/January/10 06:02
Last night I stayed up because there was a slim change of an ice storm in the coastal areas. Ice storms are highly unusual out here but extremely pretty. An ice storm is happening when the temperatures outside are slightly above zero, but the service is still freezing, when starts to rain the raindrops are still liquid but when it touches something it will freeze up right away leaving a crystal clear layer of ice on everything. Because this is such a highly unusual event it definitely would have been worth it staying awake for the whole night. All though the layer of ice was hard to find, the trees just looked shiny in the moonlight but nothing else I thought until the first tram in the morning came by and scared the crap out of me! The thin topping of ice on the overhead line was scraped off by the tram what a bacon hoist gave to fire balls and lightning strikes. I’’ve taped he firstly next tram that came on video, it wasn’t as violent as the first one but still... To be honest, it’s kid of lame...
Got another picture of a beautiful icicle!

Where is Global Warming when you expect it?
24/January/10 23:54
I don’t really believe in global warming. What I do know is that the water streams which are called “El Nino and La Nina” are spicing things up a little lately causing some extreme weather conditions. But this happens every 10 years, it all natural. When you’re looking back at natures history you’ll discover that there have always been dramatic shifts in our climate system since the beginning with an accurate schedule. And since man is ruling the earth, we are running behind on that schedule. So I think that is what they call global warming. But non the less are we experiencing some extreme weather throughout the northern regions caused by El Nino. The winter wasn’t this severe since 1997. Europe is covered in snow and has temperatures far below average, the same is happening in the northern parts of America and Canada. Other strange conditions have been happening as well. Like The Olympic games in Vancouver are in trouble because they have no ice and no snow at all! And California and Florida are troubled by some severe thunderstorms and tornado’s. That’s unusual because it’s off season and out of location. Central America is awaiting for an winterstorm that will probably shut everything down for the upcoming 2 weeks.
So far we can be lucky out here in Rotterdam, no snowfall, no ice, no storms, just a temperature that you can describe as “cold”. Nothing unusual, but certainly not average. Otherwise we would be covered in sleet en rain with a daily temperature about 5 degrees celsius. The average this winter is about 10 degrees lower than that, not so bad, but definitely not exciting.

Caught a snow devil!

The chase for some extreme weather didn’t take me very far last weekend. In matter of fact, it was a 5 minute walk until I saw a highly unusual phenomena for a place like this. It was a very real snow devil in the middle of Rotterdam and I caught it on camera!
This weekend wasn’t very exciting for us compared to all that snow the rest of Europe got. In other parts of Europe they’re witnessing a winter they haven’t seen up to a decade. In the northern part of the country people are covered in over a meter of snow! The chase for some extreme weather didn’t take me very far last weekend. See the picture below what I saw wind is capable of, really spectacularly to watch, I almost forgot I had my camera still in the bag. It might be hard to see what it is but no, it’s not a tornado, not a twister and not a water/snowsprout (which is actually all nearly the same). This is a snow devil! To bad there wasn’t much snow for this thing to pick up so it’s a little low contrasted. Up in the sky you can see some small tree branches sucked up right into the air! Not very dangerous though, the birds don’t even respond to it.

Cold!

This weekend will be interesting. We’re getting some high wind speed in combination of temperatures below zero and snow. The wind won’t be severe enough to cause any snow blizzards, but it will cause a windchill like we haven’t seen in a while. A temperature of -5 will feel like it’s -15 out there!
So dress up and enjoy, especially when you’re living in the eastern part of Holland, you’ll have more snow then we’ll have in Rotterdam, as usual. So far we’re experiencing a real winter like we should but haven’t lately. Al Gore, where’s you’re global worming now eh?
Update:
KNMI just gave an national weatheralarm for the weekend, Be aware of locally slippery roads due to freezing and snow remnants. That’s funny, as far as I know it’s been slippery everywhere here for over a week now. The rest of the warning is about snowfall in combination of lots of wind causing a lot of snowy-problems. That means your car can get trapped just like we’ve seen right before christmas.
Noting serious to worry about. This time we all know that public services are down and there will be lots of traffic jams. We’ll be better prepared for some severe weather this time!
